RestaurantWatch.com is a new site that lets you check the health inspection grade of L.A. restaurants by zip code. With registration, you can create a watch list, see inspection details and receive e-mail when news about your favorites occurs. It claims to be spam-free, but I didn't register to test it. What you can't apparently do is just enter the name of a restaurant anywhere and get its score.
A while back, a small faux-Italian trattoria in Toluca Lake whose name I cannot remember had a "C" posted in its window. Previously, the place had been sporting an "A". The same day the "C" went up, the owner of the restaurant posted a letter on the window next to the County health sign telling the public that she completely disagreed with the grade, that she was professional chef who ran a spotless kitchen, and that she was going to get the "A" rating back. About a month later, the "C" was gone, replaced by an "A". That actually prompted me try the food (I liked the place, although the tiramisu wasn't that great.)

You have been able to enter a restaurant and see its score at http://lapublichealth.org/rating/
since around the beginning of the entire system.
It is very convenient as an address directory. But people who obsess about the actual letters should take a look at their own kitchin some time.
