'Civil war' at Register over

Freedom Communications CEO Alan J. Bell calls the deal to keep the Register mostly in the Hoiles family "nothing less than an armistice" between long-feuding factions. He will stay on under the deal, which lets those family members who wished to go cash out, but keeps the paper and the company intact. In contrast, when dissident Chandlers wanted to take their inheritances they secretly dished off Times Mirror to the Tribune Co. and got out of town.
