Rick Orlov of the Daily News is called the dean of L.A. City Hall reporters in Cathy Seipp's "Media Circus" column in today's CityBeat -- on the job since 1988. "The Riordan administration was more fun because they were so unprofessional politically," Orlov says. "Riordan would just say whatever was on his mind, whereas [Mayor James] Hahn has been around politics since he was five years old." Orlov uses a cane since being diagnosed with diabetes and losing some toes. One quibble: the column talks about Orlov scooping the Times on some stories (and presumably other City Hall reporters such as David Zahinser of the Breeze). True enough, but it flows the other way too.
Also in City Beat: Dennis Romero handicaps the possible candidates for mayor.
Zat was my point. Absolutely. Stay well.

Hye, according to KPCC, Marc Haefele is the "dean of the city hall" reporters! Maybe Rick is the beloved headmaster? The provost?
Professor emeritus?
All kidding aside, Rick does an excellent job, and always has...glad to see (hear? read?) he is dealing with his diabetes.
And Marc does as well. Both know where the bodies are buried...
Best regards to both
Posted by: Brad Smith at March 25, 2004 01:18 PMRick Orlov may or may not be the dean or the majority whip or whatever, but he was always my idea of a reporter's reporter.
Posted by: Josh at March 25, 2004 05:58 PMI revere rick orlov as much as any one. I drink his booze, eat his chips and shmooze with him every chance i get. And I think he deserves all the credit Seipp gives him for his good work over the years. But can't he just be the Generalissimo of City Hall reporters and the hell with it? Why does he have to swipe my sobriquet? The title of Dean of CH reporters was granted me by my on-air host John Rabe at KPCC around 3 years ago for our weekly downtown news show segment. I believe I've earned it, though. Had Seipp lifted a finger to find out (like, asked me), she would have discovered I came to LA City Hall for City News in late 1984 -- four years before Rick showed up. And I began covering city halls in 1978 for the New Jersey Daily Record, where I reported on municipal venues from Newark to Lake Hopatcong. So unless Rick can unearth another decade of city hall experience someplace, I'm the Dean. And he's the deputy dean. And Seipp is the dunce.
cordially

Posted by: marc haefele at March 26, 2004 06:35 AMAnyone who complains about not being named the "dean" of LA City Hall journalists should get a life. Must you clutch at such straws to prop up a meaningless existence?
Posted by: Luke Ford at March 26, 2004 06:41 AMSounds like someone's feeling his winkles got pinched.
OK, for the record, I first heard Rick Orlov referred to as the Dean of City Hall Reporters when I wrote about him for Buzz magazine 10 yrs ago. His "City Hall experience," if we're going to define it like that, in a way precedes 1988 as he was City Editor of the LA Daily News when I was there from 1981-85. Haefele has mostly written for weeklies, not dailies. But then he does have that background in New Jersey, so...
How about we say that Marc Haefele is the Dean of L.A. City Hall Reporters Who Have Also Covered New Jersey Politics?
Posted by: Cathy Seipp at March 26, 2004 10:11 AMIf there were any doubts before, I think we now know with certainty that journalists are the biggest babies in the world.
I don't know Mr. Haefele, but I must say that his message was the most ridiculous thing ever. C'mon, claiming rights to the title of dean of city hall?
Ok, well, from here on out, I claim the titles of Duke, Earl, chairman and tsar of the Azusa City Council
Posted by: Perry White at March 26, 2004 01:47 PMNotice no one actually says Rick is the best city hall reporter, just the longest serving one. And based on what Marc wrote, maybe Seipp should have done a little research rather than use her column to hype her friends. (Again).

Just for the record, "l.a. scribe," the Orlov column was unusual for me in that it was the CityBeat editor's idea, not mine.

Posted by: Cathy Seipp at March 26, 2004 06:23 PMHaefele convinced me. He can be dean. I'll be bartender.
Rick Orlov
And I'll be happy to drink Rick's booze, knowing that this, too, will be a job well done.

Kevin,
Posted by: Rick Orlov at March 25, 2004 12:19 PMThanks for the mention, but jeez, we all get scooped now and then. That is the business.
