Oh the horror of it

The lede of a story in the Sydney Morning Herald was written to prey on the worst fears of Australians and decent people everywhere:

Sydney has been warned that it could become another Los Angeles, driving people away, if transport links and environmental protection are not improved...

Cathy Zoi, the former head of the NSW Sustainable Energy Development Authority, said decisions on sustainable growth had to be made now, or "another Los Angeles", with its problems of urban sprawl and pollution, would be created.

Save the women and children first.

I don't blame them. If I saw an L.A.-type sprawl in my city's future, I'd do everything possible to warn against becoming like us. We are a lesson in urban planning gone awry (or in no urban planning at all).

The greater Sydney metropolitan area has not one but two deep embayments running through it (Port Jackson to the north and Botany Bay to the south); they probably want to worry more about becoming the next Brooklyn or Queens...

Or maybe Jersey City.
