The other Huffington

Michael Huffington clarifies the record in a piece by Robin Abcarian in today's LAT, saying that he is bi not gay, intends (unlike ex-wife Arianna) to stay a Republican, did not squander family money in his doomed bid for the U.S. Senate from California a decade ago, and was not secretly relieved that he lost. He has gotten politically active again to defend same-sex marriage.

For the first time, Huffington is stepping into the national spotlight on behalf of a gay cause. Incensed that President Bush has thrown his weight behind a proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, Huffington is helping to fund and promote a campaign against it. After a speech at last weekend's annual convention of Log Cabin Republicans — the nation's most prominent organization of gay Republicans — he chatted Saturday for 40 minutes about his decision to come forward, his disappointment in Bush and the peace he has now that he is out of the closet.
The matter is particularly painful for the lanky 56-year-old Huffington, a former Texas banker and oilman who has a long history with the Bush family, having worked for the president's father when George H.W. Bush was a congressman. He also goes way back with presidential advisor Karl Rove, whom many Log Cabin members vilified during the three-day convention here as the person responsible for pushing the president to embrace the proposed constitutional amendment.

"I had not planned to get involved with this political issue because I am the old generation," says Huffington...

He was divorced from Arianna Huffington in 1997 and went public with his sexual orientation the following year. He lives near her on the Westside; they have two daughters.

Michael Huffington as a "bi" guy does prove that, in some instances, it is a matter of free choice when a male has sexual-intimate relations with another male, or a woman has relations with another woman. Oprah Winfrey did a show a few days ago about this type of behavior among black guys who are promiscuous with other males but who remain otherwise married and fathers to their children.

A lot of homosexuality may fall into this category than the gay-rights activists, who claim their behavior is NOT a choice, want us to believe.

The fact that they commit to one person or another doesn't change the fact that they didn't choose to be attracted to both men and women.

Any time you actually have sex, that's choice. But the point is that you don't choose who you're attracted to. If we could, I'd choose to be attracted to ugly obese people, because I know I could get hella action that way.

Luke is right, as usual.

Michael was a horrible wreck of a closet case when he was in congress. Good for him for being honest with himself and others and finally coming out. And I wish him well fighting the Bush homophobia machine.

Yea, and some people (guys in particular) can't help but be attracted to more than one person at a time. It's a matter of biology, not choice. Therefore, non-monogomous activity should be excused, maybe even accomodated.

However, even a lot of dopey libs in Hollywood still get all offended when their honeys are caught fooling around with another partner, which is a big reason divorce rates are so fricken high in the capital of showbiz flakes.

Didn't Abcarian go away for a long time?

Posted by: Crid at April 22, 2004 10:05 AM

Not long enough--she had a radio talk show that her mom and her aunts listened to. That's quite a bit of clarification.
