Couple of sports notes *

Just took a look at my server logs and was surprised to see that the second most-popular search engine term for October is "Miranda McOsker." She is the 15-year-old Bishop Montgomery High School quarterback who came off the bench two Fridays ago to throw three touchdown passes. Her story has gone national since she got a front-page feature on the Daily Breeze. AP story, mention on ESPN, Sports Illustrated.com, a cousin's blog... The Breeze story opens with an anecdote about Miranda getting picked up after the game by her dad, former Hahn chief of staff Tim McOsker, and her burying the lede. She was in the car for five minutes before breaking the news that she had gotten in the game. Dad's younger brother John had once been the QB at Bishop Montgomery and they asked if he had ever thrown three touchdowns in a game: "I think the answer is no, because he hasn't gotten back to me yet."

Also: Blogger Jon Weisman comments on the shrinking Times' sports section shifting some of the team notes and other stories to LATimes.com under the banner of Sports Extras. Today's batch of online-only coverage includes the day's staff-written report on Lakers training camp on Oahu, items on the return of Kings enforcer Ken Belanger and on Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, and a bunch of motor sports, surfing and horse-racing stories that didn't make the paper.

* Tuesday update: In fact the Times' only mention of Miranda McOsker was in Sports Extras on the website. Meanwhile, she's been on KTLA, KCAL, and CNN and apparently has invites from Oprah and Letterman.
