Starters
Lincoln's Birthday non-holiday
Now that most schools and other institutions have switched over to the Presidents Day model, pretty much everything is open except for courts.
Groundbreaking at Hollywood and Vine
The symbolic turning of the shovel for the new W hotel and other projects to densify the corner goes down at 11:15 am with Mayor Villaraigosa being joined by Jimmy Kimmel?
Politics
Dowie script fallout
After the Times broke the story of ex-Fleishman-Hillard exec Doug Dowie's script being optioned by the husband of L.A.'s Best chief Carla Sanger, I'm told she got a call from current Fleishman boss Richard Klein cancelling the firm's long-standing pro bono support of the after school programs.
Grand Avenue comes up for a vote
Both the Supes and the City Council have it on their Tuesday agendas. The Downtown News does an advancer, while the editorial page urges swift approval. Times also urges approval.
LAFD deputy chief is mayor of Thousand Oaks
Andy Fox's career may be in jeopardy over his handling of the Tennie Pierce case and the department's culture, the LAT says.
Monday columns
Orlov/DN: County executive's power, Dowie's script.
Hymon/LAT: Chemical spraying in the Arroyo Seco, reading parking meters.
Parra vs Huizar
LAT story doesn't answer the question: does Alvin Parra have the community support to be a serious challenge to his former boss, or is Parra just another minor league distraction who gives reporters and bloggers something to write about for a few months?
Media
Tribune unlikely to sell, WSJ says
"An underwhelming conclusion" is likely to include spin-off of TV properties and a one-time cash dividend to appease stockholders. WSJ
Geffen back on Coastal Commission agenda
The would-be newspaper mogul's application to grandfather in approval of some work on his manse at Carbon Beach comes up again this week. Agenda item 11a.
Inside the Grammys
They hold the nominees' reception the night before at the Wilshire Ebell and Maria of Franklin Avenue — being a nominee — got an invite.
Noted
Pico House to get tenants
The restored former 1870 hotel built by Pio Pico may rent upstairs offices to architects and other professionals. There's talk of an upscale restaurant on the ground floor. It was the first three-story building in the pueblo, says Jay Berman in the Downtown News.
Ken Levine beats me to it
The TV writer/blogger says he's the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby.
Walking 6th Street
Sha in L.A. leads the way: five walkers and seven miles in about five hours, including a stop to wet their whistles at the Pacific Dining Car. * Not to be outdone: Walking Sunset from end to end, with Will Campbell of blogging.la.
