Celebrating in style

Bon Appétit senior editor Heather John began dreaming about her post-L.A. Marathon meal long before she entered (and completed) Sunday's race. When her first choice didn't work out, she settled for something...better.

JohnI've spent the last seven months thinking about what I was going to have for dinner this past Sunday night....My first choice would've been a Number 19 sandwich at Langer's in MacArthur Park, but cruelly they're closed on Sundays. Which got me thinking about another LA classic—Dan Tana's with its clubby dining room with red-check tablecloths, cheesy garlic toast, fried ravioli, tableside Caesar, creamed spinach, and a perfectly charred New York steak. But here was the real kicker, the thought of which helped me over that awful hill at mile 22: Dan Tana's ice-cold perfect Maker's Mark Manhattan, served up with one cherry. Now that's a winner!

First time in a while that I've stopped in at the Bon Appétit blog, which draws heavily on the L.A. office in the Conde Nast tower at Wilshire and McCarthy Vista. By the way, John's marathon-eye view of Los Angeles was a little different than Michael Newman's — go to We Get Email.
