creditOne of TMZ's cellphone video spies caught up with Mayor Villaraigosa and Mirthala Salinas doing some shopping at Fashion Square in Sherman Oaks. The report says that — no surprise — the mayor was happy to see the camera pointed his way while the suspended newscaster was shy about being photographed. Villaraigosa even clicked through the photos to see what was captured. Fashion report: Antonio wore a suit, while Mirthala looked lovely in jeans and heels.

Also: ERS News.com says, based on unnamed sources, that Salinas has been spending a lot of time at Getty House, the city's official mayoral residence.

* 3 pm update: Villaraigosa told Channel 4's Ana Garcia he was buying shoes that day and didn't know about the video getting on TMZ. She also tried to ask about emails and schedule information the mayor's won't release to KNBC, but Villaraigosa refused to bite during an appearance in the City Hall tower. Channel 4's NewsRaw service billed the encounter as a scuffle, but frankly I didn't see any scuffle — the mayor's LAPD detail just blocked Garcia at a couple of junctures. Apparently Channel 4 will have an investigative report on the mayor this evening.

As newspapers and television pull back from investigative reporting, foundations and other organizations are beginning to fill the void. One of the most interesting is Accountable California, a project of Local 721 of the Service Employees International Union.
