Daily News columnist Steve Dilbeck leads the paper today with a column about learning that his 14-year-old son had Type 1 diabetes.

We took him out of school and when I broke the news to him as we walked to the car, he became understandably frightened. Tears streamed down his cheeks. I tried to console him, but the truth was none of us knew exactly what it meant.

By the time we reached the hospital, Alex had begun to rebound.

"Hope I get a hot nurse," he said.

The hospital attendant could not get a blood sugar reading. His was simply too high for the meter to measure. In the ER, they took blood and his glucose level came back at 780. We were told it should be between 80 and 150. Now knowing he would be admitted to the hospital and stay a couple days, his first lament was almost predictable.

"I'm going to miss my game tonight," he said.

The rest.
