Associate editor Daniel Yi has quit the L.A. Daily Journal to flack for the Port of Long Beach, and he left with an appreciative note to his colleagues about the fun he had practicing journalism with them. He also prepared them for how he'll likely handle any inquiries from them in his new position, including "we do not comment on pending litigation...no one is available to comment for your puny story...the dog ate my comment" and "the Daily Who?" His exit note is after the jump.

Alright, so it wasn't that long... or distinguished... or much of a career for that matter, but it was a blast.

As you know, I've taken a communications job at the Port of Long Beach starting next week. I'll be handling media inquiries, creating outreach programs and overall promoting what the port does. It is not journalism, but as PR gigs go it has some redeeming qualities, not the least of which are the pay and awesome benefits.

And that is the only reason why I am leaving.

The last couple of months here at the Daily Journal felt a little like being in one those movies where you get a reprieve from death to come back and appreciate all you had while living. If it isn't a movie, it should be.

When I left the Times a year and half ago, I thought I was leaving journalism for good. Being at the Daily Journal rekindled my passion for the profession and gave me the privilege of practicing it one last time. It is in my opinion the most fun you can have while doing a job. Except
maybe for professional golf.

So thank you all. Thank you for this opportunity to enjoy one last call. In these times of widespread uncertainty in our industry, the Daily Journal is a relative safe haven where you can still focus on what matters, good journalism.

And for any of you who might one day call the Port of Long Beach on a story you are working on, probably involving some unfound allegation or bogus lawsuit against that fine institution, let me leave you with my list of 10 standard responses.

10 - We do not comment on pending litigation.
9 - We have not seen the complaint, therefore we cannot comment.
8 - No one is available to comment for your puny story.
7 - No comment.
6 - I have no comment.
5 - The Port of Long Beach has no comment.
4 - The dog ate my comment.
3 - The Port of Long Beach is an economic engine that provides thousands of jobs in the region while still being conscientious about the environment and world peace... What was your question again?
2 - Did you try the Port of LA?
And the number One standard response you are likely to hear if you call me at my new job....
1. The Daily Who?

See you around.
