Jay Harn, former publisher at The Signal daily paper, is planning a mid-May launch of the Santa Clarita Valley Independent. Here's what Jeff Wilson says at SCV Talk:

The 30-40 page weekly tabloid-style paper will feature original news, sports and entertainment stories as well as opinion pieces.

In the past few weeks, Harn, along with fellow investors Alex Schildkrit, and Greg Eichelberger (both Signal alumni) have been gauging local interest and thinking about the design, makeup and content of the new newspaper.

When launched in mid-May, the Independent will be the second newspaper launched in the Santa Clarita Valley in the last 25 years. It comes to the community as the Daily News has pretty much ended all coverage of Santa Clarita and as the Los Angeles Times continues to downsize its newsroom.
