Jobs for journalists

Variety is advertising for an editor of the daily paper and for an online editor to run the website. Also, USC Annenberg is helping to recruit a project manager "as soon as possible" for an upcoming community-supported investigative journalism operation targeting Los Angeles. Details on that one:

Spot.us, a nonprofit investigative reporting organization launched a year ago in the Bay Area, is collaborating with the USC Annenberg School of Journalism to expand this innovative journalism outlet to Los Angeles.

We seek a project manager who will lead the journalistic side of the la.spot.us enterprise. This person will report to spot.us founder David Cohn and to Geneva Overholser, director of the Journalism School. The successful candidate will be a veteran journalist who is broadly comfortable in the digital space. We are looking for someone with experience in community building, both in social networks (online) and in physical communities (such as neighborhood organizations). Rich and deep connections within the Southern California journalism world will be invaluable.

The project manager, who will be hired on an 18-month contract, will work in collaboration with Cohn and Overholser, as well as with technical developers, to extend the reach and depth of spot.us. This is an innovative and fast-changing enterprise, and requires from its leadership a high dose of flexibility, entrepreneurialism and an experimental spirit. Strategic thinking and an ability to implement that thinking are crucial.

This is a ¾ time job. Hours are flexible. A majority of the work will be done in the project manager’s home, with occasional time spent on the USC campus at Annenberg.

We are moving forward quickly on the la.spot.us rollout, and want to hire the project manager as soon as possible. Please send an email explaining your interest in this position, along with a resume, to Nancy Ruiz, assistant to Geneva Overholser.

As usual, if you have to contact me to find out how to apply, you're not ready for these jobs.
