Water main break in Van Nuys *

watermainbreak11209.jpgDramatic geyser is blowing higher than the rooftops on Van Nuys Boulevard near Sherman Way. Screen cap is from CBS 2.

* Noon update: DWP says the main, which broke at about 10:42 a.m., is still flowing. "The ruptured pipe is a 54-inch ductile iron pipe. A 'purple pipe,' the pipe is used to convey recycled water used for irrigation and industrial purposes. This rupture is not expected to interrupt regular water service to any LADWP customers." Updates at the DWP website.

1 p.m. update: The water is nearly turned off, the DWP says. The break occurred on an 8-inch connector pipe, and "it does not appear the 54-inch pipe sustained any direct damage."
