Foothill homes evacuated, mudslide threat real

rain-photo-cbs2.jpgMore than 1,000 homes beneath the Station Fire burn areas are now under mandatory evacuation orders, per media reports. This includes 262 homes in the Tujunga area. Mayor Villaraigosa raised the specter of the deadly Ventura County landslide that buried homes and residents in 2005. "We could be looking at a La Conchita-type mudslide," Mayor Villaraigosa said at a media op this morning. "This it not just hyperbole." LAPD chief Charlie Beck warns that if officers come to your door to ask you to leave, you should leave: "We're doing it because you're life is at risk."

There are more than the usual street floodings — including the traditional spots such as Tuxford Avenue at San Fernando Road in Sun Valley — and the washes are rising, though for the most part the runoff channels are not full. Josh Rubinstein on KCAL-9 is doing a good job of bringing the perspective that a lot of the flooding is in predictable spots, especially in the Valley. Another stronger storm with thunder cells is blowing in this afternoon.
