W Hotel opens in Hollywood

w-hollywood-curbed.jpgGuests began checking in on Thursday, apparently, but today is the official opening day for the W Hotel and Residences at Hollywood Boulevard and Vine. The Metro station is embedded in the complex. The first reviews of how it fits in the cityscape are...mixed. Here are some samples:

Christopher Hawthorne, LAT: "Equal parts Chateau Marmont, L.A. Live and Pershing Square...not what you'd call an elegant addition to the rapidly expanding Hollywood skyline. And yet few recent projects have had more to say about the state of contemporary urbanism in Southern California than this one."

Marissa Gluck, Curbed LA: "The lobby's grand staircase is slightly reminiscent of Miami's Fountainebleau, and the interiors seem to be moving away from the minimalism of late 1990s/early 2000s W Hotels, with more texture, color and pattern."

Curbed reader Woolsey: "From the outside, it looks like a high-rise college dorm. With supergraphics."
