Tipster Doug emails to point out three: Sunday is the 63rd anniversary of the Apple Pan opening on Pico in the Rancho Park/Westwood neighborhood, across the street from what is now the Westside Pavilion. That same week in 1947, former UCLA star Jackie Robinson (April 15) broke the major league baseball color barrier with his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers — and future UCLA and Lakers great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was born (April 16, as Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor.)

Also noted: On April 15, 1954, the final segment of the Hollywood Freeway connecting Downtown with the Valley was dedicated.

Further noted: On April 11, 1960, Otis Chandler was introduced to Los Angeles as the next publisher of the Times at a big gathering at the Biltmore.
