Gone but not forgotten, KCET style

ralph-story-grab.jpgDuring the upcoming pledge breaks, KCET Channel 28 will air a freshly made update of "Things That Aren't Here Anymore." That was the name on two popular specials about Los Angeles places and landmarks that are no longer around, starring the station's late and legendary Ralph Story. I'm pretty sure they remain among the station's most asked-about old shows. "Things That Aren't Here Anymore 3," set to premiere June 10, will update and explore "iconic Los Angeles and Southern California clubs, restaurants, family attractions and hang outs associated with the 60s, 70s and early 80s" — places like Tower Records on Sunset, Ben Frank's, Rodney's English Disco, Pandora's Box, The Ash Grove, Chasen's, drive-in movie theaters and a lot more. Longtime KCET hands Saul Gonzalez (a contributing producer and correspondent for "SoCal Connected" and "PBS's The NewsHour") and Isaac Mizrahi are producing; Mizrahi (yeah, no relation) was a producer on the earlier shows. Story died in 2006.

Noted: KCET has redesigned its website, including Departures — "KCET's hyper-local web documentary, community engagement tool and digital literacy program about the cultural history of Los Angeles' neighborhoods" — and the blogs.

Add Story: Ralph Story's papers are at the UCLA Library's Department of Special Collections; UCLA's Film and Television archive also has 104 videotapes from 1964-70 of his show, Ralph Story's Los Angeles.
