Julius Shulman home sells for $2.25 million

shulman-house.jpgEscrow closed last week on the late photographer's Raphael S. Soriano-designed home on Woodrow Wilson Drive — Los Angeles historic-cultural monument #325. Redfin puts the sales price at 2.25 million. Shulman used to open the home to pretty much any of his fans who came by — so a lot did — and he spoke lovingly of the wildly grown-in backyard — redwood tree included — in the recent documentary "Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman." The house sold at $200,000 under asking price, but Curbed LA says Shulman's survivors are happy the landmark will be preserved.

Samuel Heller, the listing agent and Shulman's nephew, tells Curbed that he and Shulman's daughter insisted that any buyer have only pure intentions for the historic-cultural monument, and over the last year rejected four "excellent" offers (one potential buyer wanted to turn the garage into a kitchen and add another garage somewhere else on the property). He says the couple that finally bought the house is "everything we wanted" and that the family didn't even counter their offer. He adds that the buyers will probably install air conditioning and replace things like bathroom tile and the dishwasher, but don't want to make major changes. A source tells Curbed one of the buyers is a well-known science writer.

Hmm, that narrows it down considerably.
