Villaraigosa 'disappointed' in DREAM Act vote

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa put out a news statement shortly after the Senate on Saturday blocked a vote on the DREAM Act. Here's what he sent:

I am disappointed that the United States Senate blocked the DREAM Act today. This sensible, pragmatic piece of legislation would have strengthened our economy and infused the talent and skills of hard-working, educated young adults into our country's workforce and military.

Unfortunately, what is right for America and just for millions of young people who know America as home, was superseded by a minority of Senators who chose not to act in the best interest of the nation.

While today is not the day we had hoped for, we will continue to move forward in our efforts to reform our nation's immigration laws."

He was happier about the Senate's repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" the same day: "For too long, many of the brave men and women who serve our country have had to do so in silence. That ends today. With this vote, all men and women in uniform will enjoy the freedom to openly be who they are, as they selflessly fight to preserve the freedom of others abroad. This vote is a victory for equal rights as well for the security of our country."
