For LACMA's 46th birthday, a sculptor gets his day

david-smith-lacma-2.jpgThe Los Angeles County Museum of Art opened on Wilshire Boulevard 46 years ago Thursday — March 31, 1965. That year, talks on mounting a major show of sculptor David Smith's work ended when he died in a car accident. On Sunday, the museum finally will open an exhibit of pieces by Smith, considered by many the greatest American sculptor of the 20th century. Preservation architect Brenda Levin designed the exhibit. At Native Intelligence, our Judy Graeme offers an admiring advance look.
