Capitol Weekly suspends print edition, goes web only

The Sacramento-oriented weekly published by the York family of Malibu announced today that Thursday's ink-on-paper edition will be the last. The publication will continue on the web. A statement from publisher Arnold York:

This step, an essential element of the reorganization of our company, was prompted by challenging economic times coupled with the need for new technologies to expand our company’s online, social media and electronic communication capabilities. At the same time, we will also continue to produce our other Capitol Weekly initiatives, including our CW Conference series, special events (CW Top 100),our television show ( Politics On Tap) and CW’s California Political Ad Placement Network...

This is a big step for us and a sad one too. While we are committed print journalists, the economy, changing readership habits and increasing demand for speed and access have required us to take a hard look at how to best meet today’s needs of our readers and advertisers and allocate our resources accordingly.

Capitol Weekly started in 1988 as a publication carrying state job listings. Arnold and Karen York bought it in 2005 and finished the shift into covering state government news and politics. The weekly's daily blog The Roundup will apparently continue.

The Yorks also publish Malibu Times and Malibu Times Magazine.
