Brentwood Run canceled: fees too high, sponsors too few

brentwood-run.jpgThe Brentwood 5k/10k Run on San Vicente Boulevard had become a Memorial Day tradition after 35 years. An email notice on Friday reminded runners and Westsiders who lined the route that "regretfully, the Brentwood Run has been cancelled for this year due to a loss in financial sponsorships."

In a story earlier this month at Brentwood Patch, the owner of the company that promotes the race cited "high city fees and a lack of key sponsorship as cause for the cancellation."

[Walt] Walston told Patch that it costs him about $11,000 to close down San Vicente Boulevard for the event.

"We had two major sponsors drop out early last month and with the City fees so high we do not have time to reach out to new sponsors this late," Walston said.
