Friday politics notes: Supes, sheriff, more

The candidates to succeed Zev Yaroslavsky on the Board of Supervisors — Sheila Kuehl, Bobby Shriver, John Duran and Pamela Conley Ulich — met at UCLA under the auspices of SPJ and KCRW. Warren Olney of "Which Way, LA?" moderated. Coverage: KPCC, LAT, DN

The contest to head the nation's second-largest teachers union will go to a second round, pitting challenger Alex Caputo-Pearl against incumbent Warren Fletcher, who finished a distant second in the initial UTLA race. LAT

Ron Smith, a mostly Republican political consultant who split his time between San Francisco and Los Angeles, died at age 71. Mark Z. Barabak obit in LAT
