Campaign 2014

Zev makes clear: he has not endorsed Shriver

shriver-flyer-zev.jpgIf you get the LA Times in print, you may have seen an advertising flyer stuffed in Saturday's paper from the Bobby Shriver for Supervisor campaign. On one side is a big picture of Zev Yaroslavsky, the longtime county supervisor in the 3rd district. "Who Shares His Values?," the flyer asks. Flip it over and the headline says "Bobby Shriver Does!," with a big photo of Shriver and his family. There are quotes from Yaroslavsky about Shriver, picked up from old LA Times and New York Times stories, and the whole thing hopes to trick voters into thinking Yaroslavsky has endorsed Shriver. But he hasn't. Yaroslavsky has not stated a preference between Shriver and Sheila Kuehl.

On Sunday, Yaroslavsky's office put out a statement asking Shriver to cut it out.

"I have absolutely NOT endorsed either candidate in this supervisor's election. Yesterday's Times insert is obviously the Shriver campaign's effort to create that impression, but I remain completely neutral in this election. Both the Shriver and the Kuehl campaigns know that I am neutral, and I ask that the campaign refrain from further disseminating any literature of this kind."

The Times advertising insert set off a clash of words between the rival campaign consultants. Parke Skelton, Kuehl's chief campaign adviser, called the Shriver flyer “a despicable effort by a desperate campaign to mislead voters….We demand that the Shriver campaign take immediate steps to correct the false impression that his advertising has left and that he apologize to voters for attempting to trick them.”

However, Shriver consultant Bill Carrick said there was nothing to apologize for. The flyer does not suggest a Yaroslavsky endorsement, Carrick said. "We took quotes that were in the public record and used them," he said. "It is very accurate. We are telling the voters that Bobby has the same values as Zev."
