Possible list of Register staffers headed north to Los Angeles

Here are the names of more than 40 Orange County Register newsroom reporters, editors and photographers who are on a list said to represent the starting staff of the upcoming LA Register. The unconfirmed list comes from a source who has been accurate regarding the Register before, and includes some names that were pretty obvious. Business reporter David Ferrell worked at the Los Angeles Times in a number of reporting positions, including as a city-county reporter, and also wrote for the LA Weekly. Susan Carpenter, listed as a cars and environment reporter, used to write the motorcycle column for the LA Times and also reported on several beats for the Times. She recently was on KPCC talking about her LA-area garden rigged to catch and utilize rain water, so she's local. The Register will be helped sprinkling some deep LA experience among the staffers coming up, some of whom are young and fairly inexperienced. Managing editor Donna Wares also was an editor at the Times with several years on the job in Los Angeles; her husband, Ed Humes, has written a few non-fiction books about LA and written for Los Angeles magazine.

The list indicates there are five slots for covering the Valley (versus just one for the Westside) and that's interesting because it would be more reporting resources than the Times has in the Valley, and also because it says the Register won't be shy about taking on the Daily News. Indeed, this list puts LA Register in direct competition with the Los Angeles News Group in several locations, not just on the Daily News turf in the Valley.

Finally, let's not forget that each of these journalists coming north to LA County (assuming the list is correct) means less or diluted coverage of Orange County. If there's a loser in the Register's imperial ambitions, it's probably OC.
