Declaring your intent, vowing to run, gathering sigs, talking to your family — none of it matters until this final certified list of the candidates who actually completed their paperwork to run for office and get on the ballot. Only one City Council member, the Valley's Mitch Englander, gets a free ride with no opponent. The open seats in the 4th and the 8th districts, to succeed Tom La Bonge and Bernard Parks, are the most contested and the most interesting, plus the confrontation in the 14th between incumbent Jose Huizar and the former councilwoman, and county supervisor, Gloria Molina, and in the 6th district between incumbent Nury Martinez and the woman who always runs in the east Valley, Cindy Montanez.
