Mariel Garza of Sacramento Bee joins LA Times editorial board

mariel-garza-bee.pngMariel Garza used to the opinion editor for the Los Angeles News Group and, before that, at the Daily News. She also was a columnist for the Daily News. She more recently, since 2014, has been the deputy opinion editor for Dan Morain at the Sacramento Bee. She's coming back to Los Angeles as an editorial writer at the LA Times. Here's this afternoon's memo from Nick Goldberg, the editor of the editorial pages, co-signed with publisher Austin Beutner.

Colleagues:

We’re pleased to announce that Mariel Garza will be joining the Los Angeles Times as a member of our editorial board.

The editorial board’s mission of informing and engaging Times readers is a vital one. It is on the editorial pages that we seek to elevate the conversation and advance important ideas and perspectives, while joining with readers in a dialogue that serves our community. Mariel will bring a wealth of talent, experience and – dare we say – opinions to this important job.

She’s currently the deputy editorial page editor of the Sacramento Bee and is a former editor of the editorial pages of the L.A. Daily News and Los Angeles News Group. She's been a City Hall reporter, a columnist and a blogger. She's also taught aspiring journalists at USC and Cal State Northridge. Along the way, she's been recognized with several awards from the California Newspaper Publishers Association, L.A. Press Club and American Society of Business Press Editors. She’s even a trained emergency medical technician, which can't hurt.

As a member of the editorial board, Mariel’s sophisticated understanding of state, county and city issues will enrich our discussions and inform her writing on behalf of The Times.

We look forward to her arrival; she’ll be moving back to L.A. from Sacramento and should be on staff early next month.

Austin and Nick
