LA Times turmoil: the view from New York and Chicago*

The New York Times went front page today with reporter Ravi Somaiya's take on what's going on — and going to happen — at the Los Angeles Times. “Tribune has just destroyed the paper over the years — they sucked the blood out of it — and only over the last year, since Austin became publisher, did it start to feel like a hometown newspaper again,” said Antonio Villaraigosa, the former mayor who Austin Beutner served for a time as deputy mayor.

The story repeats the number previously published that there could be $10 million in cuts but says the 80 positions will be cut via layoffs, when all other sources say there will be buyouts first, as planned before Beutner was fired, and layoffs only if they are needed to reach the target of 80 positions. Can't be sure, but I think the New York Times just rounded out the nuance on that. What thje story adds new is an interview with Tribune Publishing CEO Jack Griffin, who fired Beutner when it became clear he was marching to his own drumbeat in Los Angeles.
