Soon-Shiong also now interested in buying LA Times

soon-shiong-forbes.jpgAdd Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, by some measures the wealthiest person in Los Angeles, to the list of those possibly interested in buying the Los Angeles Times from Tribune Publishing. The paper isn't officially for sale, of course, but the value of the company keeps dropping, making Tribune Publishing a potential target of a takeover. The Los Angeles Business Journal says, citing an unnamed source, that Soon-Shiong is considering making an offer just to buy the Times.

“It isn’t that far along, but he is seriously considering it now,” said the source, who said Soon-Shiong previously considered buying the paper a few years ago.

The source added that Soon-Shiong, whose net worth the Business Journal calculated at $15.3 billion in May, has not yet contacted the Times’ parent company, Chicago’s Tribune Publishing Co., regarding a sale.

It’s unclear whether Soon-Shiong would be the sole bidder or whether he would partner with other individuals or groups.

So a pretty thin report, but another drumbeat that LA's wealthy class is intrigued by the possibility of being the Times on the cheap.
