So how bad was California hit by the recession?

Really bad, according to data released today by the Census Bureau. A few examples (via Capitol Alert):

Number of employees in 2006: 13.8 million
Number of employees in 2010: 12.5 million

Number of businesses in 2006: 878,128
Number of businesses in 2010: 849,875

Number of construction jobs in 2006: 958,436
Number of construction jobs in 2010: 584,801

Number of manufacturing jobs in 2006: 1.45 million
Number of manufacturing jobs in 2010: 1.14 million

Number of health care jobs in 2006: 95,048
Number of health care jobs in 2010: 101,157

That's right, health care remained a growth industry - even during the downturn. The Census website has a zillion data points you can access, if you dare.
