Sharp-eyed readers of the Times might have noticed recently that Times Riverside reporter Hugo Martin's byline has changed subtly—to Hugo Martín. He explains today, in a Calendar Weekend story (sub req'd) about bylines, that he wanted to better express his Latino heritage. So the pronunciation has changed from MAR-tuhn to mar-TEEN. The story, by James Rainey, also talks to Baltimore Sun (and former OC Register) sportswriter Peter Schmuck about the grief his name has caused through the years. The story is built around the byline conundrum posed at the New York Times when a second reporter named Patrick Healy was hired.
