Changing tune

Mayor Villaraigosa's office has issued a second statement on the selection of Vice Admiral Brewer to head the Los Angeles Unified School District. It's considerably more let's-get-along than yesterday's "deeply disappointed" message. The new one comes via press secretary Matt Szabo:

Mayor Villaraigosa has invited Admiral Brewer to meet as soon as he returns from his trade mission in Asia.

The Mayor is eager to discuss how he and the new Superintendent can build a forward-looking partnership to implement AB 1381 and bring positive change for the students and families of LA Unified.

Hmm, maybe the photos of an accomplished black man in a Navy uniform — who can't be fired by the mayor, even if Villaraigosa wanted to take on the ethnic political storm that would ensue — played a part in the conciliatory tone.
