New America Media Awards

Locals did darn well in the first awarding of these journalism prizes. The banquet is tonight in Washington, D.C. Selected winners:

* Dennis Romero, staff writer at Tu Ciudad, best investigative/in-depth piece for The Other Side. Simone Gao of New Tang Dynasty TV in Monterey Park won the broadcast investigative award.
* Euyhun Yi of The Korea Times, best international affairs story in a non-English language.
* Ky-Phong Tran of the Nguoi Viet Daily News in Orange County, best arts sports or entertainment story.
* Pilar Marrero of La Opinión, best story on black/brown relations.
* Roy Lu of KSCI-TV LA-18, broadcast coverage of immigrant rights.
* John Thai Dinh of Little Saigon TV, broadcast coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
* Jerry Sullivan of the Garment and Citizen, honorable mention for commentary.
* Frank Quevedo, vice president at Southern California Edison, named an Ethnic Media Champion.
