Former Assemblyman Paul Koretz put himself in the running for the 5th council district race that will be fought the next two years over the seat to be vacated by Jack Weiss. Koretz claims the endorsements of Speaker Fabian Núñez and council members Herb Wesson, Bill Rosendahl, and Dennis Zine. Koretz won't have to move to get in, unlike ex-Controller and possible candidate Rick Tuttle. Weiss is expected to eschew running for reelection in order to run for City Attorney.

* Slick wording?: Koretz's release states that he lives in the Beverly-Fairfax area and lived in the 5th district "nearly 20 years" — meaning apparently from elementary school through UCLA. But until recently (at least), says a reader, he lived in a West Hollywood condo. That is, outside Los Angeles and, of course, the district. He also was a WeHo city councilman.

As newspapers and television pull back from investigative reporting, foundations and other organizations are beginning to fill the void. One of the most interesting is Accountable California, a project of Local 721 of the Service Employees International Union.
