David Rensin rants at Native Intelligence about a close call with a cellphone-gabbing, wide-turning Valley driver, and Jenny Price makes the case for camping in the canyons above Malibu despite concerns about fire. At SoCal Sports Observed, Phil Wallace winnows down the week in sports to a few local gems.

And in news of LAO's contributors:

  • Bill Boyarsky's Big Daddy: Jesse Unruh and the Art of Power Politics was chosen as a favorite book of 2007 by the L.A. Times Book Review staff.
  • Denise Hamilton explored the Portland neighborhood of children's writer Beverly Cleary in Sunday's Times Book Review. Also, on Tuesday night Denise heads up a discussion of L.A. Noir, which she edited, at the Los Feliz branch library at 6:30 pm. Also on the panel will be authors Janet Fitch, Christopher Rice, Jim Pascoe, Emory Holmes II, Diana Wagman, Lienna Silver and Naomi Hirahara.
  • Eric Estrin will be at UC Irvine tonight to discuss Kite Runner with other striking screenwriters, part of a Sneak Previews program.
  • David Rensin signed with Ballantine to collaborate on the memoir of Sam Haskell, the former head of television for William Morris who retired three years ago at age 49. The book is set for publication in spring 2009. David's latest, All for a Few Perfect Waves: The Audacious Life and Legend of Rebel Surfer Miki Dora, will be published this coming April.

Who are these contributors anyway?
