Cousin John Perez tosses hat in 46th AD ring

A day after stepping down from the Community Redevelopment Agency board, labor leader John Perez joined the crowded (for now) race to succeed termed-out Speaker Fabian Núñez. Perez's entry is notable in that he's the cousin of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa — their mothers were sisters. Villaraigosa wouldn't say if he will support Perez, who just moved into the district last month and is gay. Villaraigosa appointed him to the CRA board. Núñez is backing aide Ricardo Lara and State Sen. Gil Cedillo is hosting a Sacramento fundraiser for his district director, Arturo Chavez. It's a Democratic district so the June 3 primary will settle it. David Zahniser in the LAT.
