P.M. shorts: Chick takes on Delgadillo

City Controller Laura Chick wants to audit the City Attorney’s Workers’ Compensation Program. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo declined her request to turn over records, so she is using the subpoena powers of her office. From Chick's statement today:

The City Attorney’s decision to withhold this important information from public scrutiny is a slap in the face to the people he serves. In an effort to provide the public with the accountability they deserve, I am exercising my subpoena powers for documents and records in the City Attorney’s Office pertaining to the Workers’ Compensation Program.

Since becoming Controller seven years ago and conducting 154 audits, this is only the second time that I have been forced to utilize my subpoena powers, and I don’t do so lightly. Unfortunately, due to the City Attorney’s actions, I am left with no other choice.

Let me be very clear, this is certainly a fight we should not be having and this is not about two politicians quarreling; this is about the City Attorney versus the people of Los Angeles. I call upon the City Attorney to stop stonewalling and come forward and fully cooperate with my Office in bringing forward the information owed the public.

Well, it is about two politicians quarreling. This has been long in coming.
