LAO on KPCC *

I'll be on with Larry Mantle about 10:06 am talking about the Times. Editor Russ Stanton goes on first.

Update: Stanton sounded quite subdued and was frank about the Times still making plenty of money, but says the cuts are necessary to service Sam Zell's debt on the Tribune takeover. "Probably not the smartest thing" to take on that debt, Stanton said. He characterizes himself as the last best hope to "have a crack" at saving the Times from editorial collapse, saying if he resigned in protest like his predecessors someone with a calculator from Chicago would have come in and cut things anyway: "Things could have been a lot worse."

* The soccer angle: LANG's Nick Green blogs that the Times cuts bode ill for soccer coverage, which has been reduced already at the English language media in SoCal. 100 Percent Soccer

Lee Abrams, Tribune Company's chief innovation officer, doesn’t seem too impressed with the Los Angeles Times. That’s the feeling I got when he appeared at the Los Angeles Press Club.
