Catching up on this: Monday's Los Angeles Daily Journal cited sources saying that Councilman Jack Weiss has raised $1.1 million for next year's open race for City Attorney. Weiss has also hired Ace Smith, Mayor Villaraigosa's campaign strategist. The story says that Carmen "Nuch" Trutanich, founding partner of the boutique environmental firm Trutanich-Michael, is next in line and will report about $500,000 raised. Trutanich has the backing of District Attorney Steve Cooley. Bob Hertzberg and Mike Feuer announced they aren't running.

"It is always hard to raise money for down-ticket races," Smith said. "The fact that Jack Weiss has done so well is a testament to the deep currency he has everywhere and the deep support he has in the city."

Or that's the spin, anyway.

Noted: The L.A. Times news side isn't doing anything close to a local politics blog yet, but editorial writer Robert Greene is posting meaty items on the perpetual election at Opinion L.A.

As newspapers and television pull back from investigative reporting, foundations and other organizations are beginning to fill the void. One of the most interesting is Accountable California, a project of Local 721 of the Service Employees International Union.
