The Los Angeles Unified school board approved 5-2 a buy out of Supt. David Brewer's contract, clearing the way for Ramon Cortines, who had been the mayor's chief education adviser, to get the top job. Marguerite LaMotte and Julie Korenstein voted against the buyout. LAT, DN
