Villaraigosa: end environment & human services depts

Mayor Villaraigosa today called for getting rid of the city's Environmental Affairs Department and transferring key functions and staffers to the Bureau of Sanitation and Departments of Transportation, Building and Safety and Water and Power. He also wants to create the Mayor’s Office of Energy, Environment and Sustainability. The announcement was made by the mayor with Council President Eric Garcetti.

Villaraigosa also called for pay cuts for all city employees, including himself, firefighters and police, to help reduce the number of layoffs needed to balance the city budget. The mayor's release also says the Human Services Department will be eliminated and the Commission on Children, Youth and Families integrated into the Community Development Department. The moves would only eliminate about 56 positions, saving about $3.2 million in the city general fund.
