L.A. Times presses in Orange County go dark

lat-oc-presses.jpgThe giant printing presses off the 405 freeway in Costa Mesa that were a key part of the Los Angeles Times' failed plan for West Coast domination have run for the last time. "Opened in 1968 to much fanfare, [the plant] died on a quiet note early this morning with the printing of the LAT Extra edition," pressman Ed Padgett posted Saturday at his blog. With the earlier closure and sale of a newer printing plant in Chatsworth, the Times is down to one printing facility, off Olympic Boulevard at the 10 freeway in downtown Los Angeles. Padgett: "It had been suggested to throw a memorial party on the heliport tonight at the facility, but with so many memories, no one felt like marking this sad day with a few ice-cold beers."
