Dems win in California, lose nationally

It was a Republican rout across most of the country and especially in the House of Representatives, but here in California the Democrats swept the statewide ticket — Jerry Brown, Barbara Boxer, Gavin Newsom, Debra Bowen, John Chiang and Dave Jones all winning — with the exception of the race to replace Brown as attorney general. In the AG race, Republican Steve Cooley and Democrat Kamala Harris were too close to call with half of the ballots still uncounted. Cooley led by 53,000 votes out of more than 4 million, with most of Los Angeles, Orange, San Francisco and Alameda counties still to be tallied.

On the propositions, 19, 21, 23, 24 and 27 lost. Props. 20, 22, 25 and 26 were leading.

Nationally, the Republicans picked up about 60 House seats to claim a majority, and six seats so far in the Senate. Majority Leader Harry Reid survived in Nevada, but President Obama's old seat in Illinois went Republican.
