Pomona is no. 7 and not happy about it

Pomona had apparently gotten used to being the fifth most populous city in Los Angeles County. So its fall behind Palmdale and Lancaster has promoted a column by David Allen of the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin. Pomona lost more than 8% of its population in the state's latest estimate, which reflects the 2010 census count and economic factors such as home foreclosures.

"Foreclosures certainly played a large part in the lower numbers, although how much is hard to say, demographic specialist Dan Sheya of the Finance Department told me.

"People had to go somewhere and they didn't always stay in the same area," Sheya said

Allen notes that Pomona is also behind the San Bernardino County cites of Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga and Ontario in the bigger picture of the Inland Empire. He also quips: "Demographic note: Upland's figure includes both indicted and unindicted residents."
