State officials are calling on residents to turn off their lights and turn up their thermostats between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. this afternoon due to a triple whammy of hot temperatures, a small plane crash that knocked down some transmission lines, and a power plant shutdown in San Diego County. Earlier today, forecast peak demand was seen exceeding available supplies, but the situation appears to be improving. All told, 1,900 megawatts of electricity were lost - most of it in territory controlled by Socal Edison. The plane clipped two high-voltage transmission lines as it took off from McClellan-Palomar airport in Carlsbad. (Dow Jones)
