Funny business at Herbalife

Why does today's firing of Gregory Probert as president of Herbalife not smell right? All right, the guy admitted to lying on his resume - he claimed to have received an MBA at Cal State L.A. when in fact he hadn't. That's a huge error in judgment, but it's not like ripping off the company. "The truth is that my vanity prevailed," he says. When the credentials flap broke a week or two ago, Goldman Sachs analyst Simeon Gutman said that it shouldn't merit dismissal. "He is often regarded as a key strategic thinker for the business," Gutman said. So not only does Herbalife let the guy go today, the L.A.-based company announces it at the end of a long earnings release - a release, by the way, that was issued several days before schedule. Zac Bissonnette is outraged over at Blogging Stocks. This whole kerfuffle was set off by none other than Barry Minkow, the scamster from ZZZZ Best fame who served jail time and later became a crusader for corporate wrongdoing. It's worth noting that Minkow has been going after the company for several weeks, accusing senior managers of dumping stock and making poor decisions. There's no telling whether those allegations have any basis. All we know for sure is that Probert is out of a job.
