Law firm layoffs

L.A.-based O'Melveny & Myers is firing 90 lawyers, or 10 percent of its workforce. As at other firms, the area most likely impacted is transactional work. O'Melveny chairman A.B. Culvahouse said in his layoff announcement that the litigation practice "continues to be very active and robust." The brunt of the cuts will be in NY and L.A. Meanwhile, O'Melveny copyright and trademark specialist Dale Cendali joins Kirkland & Ellis, along with two other O'Melveny attorneys (Cendali says it's unrelated to the layoff announcement). Also, James Asperger, O'Melveny's longtime white-collar group head, is leaving for L.A.-based Quinn Emanuel. Last week, another L.A. powerhouse, Latham & Watkins LLP, laid off 190 associates.
