Hard to know whether this is real, but lawmakers and the governor keep saying that they're near a deal on the budget - perhaps as early as tonight. Assembly Speaker Karen Bass says they're just several hundred million dollars apart, which given the $26 billion deficit doesn't seem like that much. We'll see. (AP)

*Check that - Budget talks broke off late last night. Education cuts seem to be the big stumbling block. (LAT)
