B.O. hits $10b

With still 9 days left in 2009, the domestic box office has crossed the $10 billion mark for the first time evah - $10,008,000,000 or thereabouts as of Tuesday, according to Hollywood.com. By year's end, the total could reach $10.5 billion - and it's happening with fewer films this year than last. From The Wrap:

In all, six films broke the $200 million mark domestically, including "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" ($402.1 million), "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" ($302 million), "Up" ($293 million), "The Hangover" ($277.3 million), "Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($275.5 million) and "Star Trek" ($257.7 million).

That, of course, doesn't include "Avatar," which is certainly a strong contender to hit the $200 million mark. So remind me again, why is Hollywood supposed to be in trouble?
